Robert Reoch Bakes

site rencontre serieux et gratuit Robert Reoch measures, beats, and sometimes whips ideas to death. Welcome to rencontre gay en creuse “Mind Pastry,” a bakery of thoughts from my mind to yours.

Robert Reoch is the Name

My last name,  my explanation Reoch, is pronounced, Rē’ŏck (rhymes with Reebok). That  image of a piece of cake floating among the palm trees in my page banner is a slice from a red velvet cake that I actually baked! Robert Reoch's Mind Pastry CakeThere’s more to Mind Pastry than just the analogy, though. I actually love pastry—and I bake it too!—but that’s another post.

Mind Pastry is Layered

I offer a dose of conscience to the Internet through many of my posts. I believe we have too many “reality TV” shows and deceptive news outlets in the media. Too often, issues are discussed from just one point of view in the news. Many pop “journalists” aren’t doing their homework. They aren’t getting out to the field to research their stories. Much of current reporting relies solely on popular social memes—mass hysteria, as I see it—rather than on verified facts and nuanced examination of the gray areas. Please, people, stop thinking only in black and white. Look for what’s in-between. Ask what is the back story you’re not getting from the media. I try to present layers and perspectives that encourage people to discover full truths. I live by three principles: Love, Truth, and Knowledge. I resent journalism that ignores these values in favor of ratings and profit. I hope you find something new and thought-provoking in Mind Pastry.

Robert Reoch Writes

I’ve written a couple of books of short stories under pen name, Robert George Reoch. I wrote my Travelers’ Shorts books with the traveler in mind, even though my stories not about travel. The idea was to provide short stories for the traveler who didn’t want to start a heavy novel. Short stories provide entertainment in manageable chunks for the person on the go. My short stories are written with taste and richness (just like pastry). These epic tales offer drama, adventure, and laugh-out-loud humor. You can order them here:

Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move

Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move

What Are Travelers’ Shorts?

Travelers’ Shorts are my short stories. Although originally written with the traveler in mind, my short stories are for everyone. In fact, they’re not even about travel. I just thought travelers might enjoy reading short stories as opposed to a lengthy novel. Thus, the title: Travelers’ Shorts.

I used to travel on business often. I was never in the mood to begin a heavy book while jetting. I didn’t like reading long tomes on vacation time either. I craved something interesting to read (on a plane, train, boat, or bus) instead of the usual newsstand pulp and in-flight magazines. I realized that other people likely shared my sentiments too. Thus, I came up with the idea of writing short stories with the traveler in mind. I knew I could write interesting content. I had a flair for the dramatic and definitely a sense of humor that other travelers might appreciate. The results came pouring out.

I wrote several epic stories—if you can call a short story epic. Some are made-up, but most are based on real life experiences. They say, write about what you know. The truth is always more interesting. I’ve been around for a while. There’s been a lot gone on in my life that makes for first-rate story telling. You’ll be convinced when you read my books. You may find a bit of yourself in them too.

From Batman to Bobby Kennedy and even Arnold Schwarzenegger. Scenarios in my tales go from mausoleums to outer space. From Southern California swimming pools to New England. There’s a rich mix of heroes, soaring icons, everyday slobs, and royalty.

My books are available in print as well as Ebook, including wireless delivery. Enjoy my short stories at your own pace, in your own time. You’ll want to read them again and again (unless I exposed you in one of my stories). Order today and see what’s inside my “Travelers’ Shorts.”

The Queen, the Bird Feeder, and the Mausoleum

Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move

“The Queen, the Bird Feeder, and the Mausoleum”

This short story from Travelers’ Shorts is worthy of a Coen Brothers film. “The Queen, the Bird Feeder, and the Mausoleum” is about a mother and son whose twisted relationship defines their bond.  As Curtis’ mother, “the Queen,” struggles to sustain her hold of power, while her son seeks ways to compromise it. Caught in the middle of the chaos, the son’s friend, Oogie, a mere bystander, observes and does his best to stay clear the fray—involving a new bird feeder, a mausoleum, and a family dinner. Did anyone notice the fourteen-foot long python?

You’ll find the full story in, Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move.

Bullying and War

Bullying and War

“John Brake’s Wars” is About Bullying

Bullying has reached new levels in the information age. Youths and adults use new tools in cowardly ways for the purpose of intimidation. Bullying has been a social ill long before cyber bullying. I wrote a short story about a tragedy involving a childhood friend of mine. The story, “John Brake’s Wars,” is based on true events. It’s about a friend of mine, a school aged boy named John Brake, who was relentlessly bullied in school while his father, a U.S. soldier, was away fighting in Vietnam.

We have seen an increase in this hostile behavior in recent years. Cyber bullying has given small minds effective tools with which to wreak havoc. The consequences are too often becoming deadly. The effects are always lasting.

“John Brake’s Wars” is just one of the short stories in my book, Travelers Shorts.

Books and Self-Publishing by Author Robert George Reoch Part 2 Marketing

Books and Self-Publishing by Author Robert George Reoch Part 2: Marketing

Books Don’t Pay Unless . . .

Books don’t pay unless:

A) Your book comes with built-in name recognition, or a signed book deal with a major publisher eager to profit from your celebrity (in other words, you are already rich and famous, or at least in the midst of your 15 minutes of fame), or

B) You’ve written a true literary masterpiece and have a well-connected saint for a book agent. There’s a caveat to the latter too. Most agents won’t touch you unless you can show you’ve already sold at least a thousand books! (See A).

Books Only Profit When They Sell Tens of Thousands of Copies

If you’ve been thinking of having your book published in hopes of making tons of money from royalties, read the above paragraph again. Depending on the price of your book, your cut will be small
compared to the actual retail price. Printers, distributors, and retailers (even Ebook retailers) take a big cut. If you sell 100 books, you will likely receive less than a thousand dollars. If you sell 1,000 books, you’ll probably make less than $5,000. If you are distributed through a site like Amazon, you’ll be
competing with millions and millions of books. Millions!

Why Your Book Won’t List at the Top

On Amazon’s site, your book title won’t necessary be listed in order, alphabetically. Algorithms decide how to list your book as befits the retailer. These secret formulas are dictated by consumer demand and will determine how early-on in the list of publications your book appears—even if your book should be first alphabetically. More popular books with similar titles will be positioned near the top of the list. If you are a new author, or unpopular, your book will quickly be lost in the morass. Again, even if someone searches for your book title by typing it in alphabetically exactly correct, it won’t pop up near the top of the list unless it’s already a big seller. (I know this from experience. Go ahead, experiment with my book titles if you like.)

Travelers’ Shorts—Short Stories by Robert George Reoch

Marketing is Key

I ran out of time for marketing my books. You may laugh. Seriously, I had an entire strategy, but life happened and I had to move away from my book projects before I could delve into serious marketing. I had given myself a timeline. Even with a solid year dedicated, life gave me too many interruptions. I finished self-publishing my books, but I needed to go back to my day job. I didn’t have time to market my books properly. However, I missed a window that would likely have been fruitless anyway. (See A in paragraph 1).

Book Marketing Requires Research

Even though I ran out of time, I still made a modest effort to market my book. I quickly discovered that book agents put up walls. While searching Online, I found websites for agents who advertised, openl, that they don’t take clients whose books have not already sold at least a thousand in number. Was I discouraged? Of course, so I moved on. I could have continued looking, however I feared I might spend more time and money for naught by falling victim to someone preying on another new author’s dreams. Some unscrupulous agent might take my money and just make a few empty promises. Perhaps they would make some weak gesture such as offering to issue a press release—something I could have done myself. That’s how things panned out.

I put up a couple of websites for my books, which was a hopeful idea, but even that doesn’t help  if people never see the websites. Meanwhile, social media explodes. This could be good. Yet, even putting one of my books on Facebook did nothing measurable.  Facebook wanted me to purchase ads (like the ones you can block). Those Facebook ads cost me more than all of the royalties I’d ever received. Ouch! (Yes, you can laugh.)

My Books Have Been Purchased

The few purchases of my books were probably made by distant relatives of whom I’ve never heard. Perhaps I made a few sales from people who happened across one of my websites, or one of my Twitter accounts. Maybe they saw the poster I tacked up on a bulletin board along the bike trail near my house that was later mowed down by an errant bicyclist. (How’s that for sophisticated marketing?)

If you want to market your book and you don’t fit the profile in item A of paragraph 1 above), you’ll need a lot of luck, plain and simple. Maybe you have a big congregation at your church who can be easily guilt-ed into buying your books.

At the end of the day, at least books should be written if only for the love of writing. Keep writing…or don’t. Be happy.

You can enjoy a clever short story in the time it takes you to wait in a long security line. Travelers’ Shorts makes the time go by quickly. Each book has a selection of engaging short stories that will take you out of the transit mode and into another more fascinating escape. These books are not travelogues or about travel. “Bicycles, Heroes, and Poets in Suburbia”

This describes one of the stories in my book, Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move… Over time, I will be providing additional descriptions of other stories in my books for the purpose of gaining more interest. Why not?

First, let me add that I have discovered the rules of obtaining visibility for a new book are as undefined as they are out of date. I am learning as I go. Not many local book stores are looking to host book signings unless the book has already become a best seller or unless the author is famous or infamous and will draw a crowd and money. I’m just getting started. The following is an overview of one of my favorite short stories as only the author can describe:

My story, “Bicycles, Heroes, and Poets in Suburbia,” has an epoch feel in the way it paints a picture of a short span of time in the late ’60s as seen through a boy’s eyes. In much the same way as some John Hughes films are now classic snapshots of the ’80s, my story is a vintage look at the ’60s with a feet-on-the-ground point of view.

In “Bicycles…” a boy is faced with finding his own way after his older brother, his hero, morphs into adolescence, leaving the ten-year-old boy to entertain himself from then on while big brother suddenly charges in a different direction. A series of adventures all connect and flow, following the emblematic spread and sprawl of housing tracts in the age of “The Bradys” and Batman TV.

The story, based mainly in true events from my childhood, even includes a fortuitous meeting with Bobby Kennedy, but that is only one of many thrills and spills in this non-stop read.

Some aspects of a boy’s life back then still ring true today, although individuals of more recent generations will find real fascination in reading what boys did for fun in the time just prior to the explosion of the Information Age and computers. A young man’s adventures in the ’60s entailed using a lot more of the landscape when the netscape hadn’t even been invented.

The story is poignant and humorous and has a common thread running throughout, that of varying interpretations of the theme of the Robert Frost poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay.”

Find “Bicycles, Heroes, and Poets in Suburbia” in my first book, Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move… You can find the book on my website: Travelers Shorts

Why the Title “Travelers’ Shorts”

I call these books “Travelers’ Shorts” because I originally decided to write short stories for travelers who don’t have the time or the desire to begin a heavy novel while on trip (whether business or leisure). However, the stories actually appeal to anyone and can be read anytime, anywhere. My writing has a universal appeal not limited to just an audience of travelers.

Another facet in the title is that, in the first book, all of the stories involve at least one pair or shorts, another innocuous tie-in.

Below are my books of short stories available from this site:

Fascinating shorts stories with a wide variety of subjects and memorable characters. Great for the those times when you don’t feel like a heavy novel, but you still want engaging reading rather than the typical newsstand fare.

My Stories Include Some Wacky Women

I just realized a minor trend in my short stories.

It’s true. It just hit me. This not merely me trying to entice the female reader. (I’ve never even thought to take that approach.) However, just today I realized that the women who have read my books have really enjoyed the stories because the women in them are real. They tell me they relate. Some of my women characters are crazy. Others are sexy. One is political, and a couple are murderous. There are also a few well-rounded lovely women who struggle and succeed in spite of life’s obstacles.

I thought this small epiphany was worth the mention. Women: you will be drawn into my stories. Men, you will get them too and you’ll see yourselves in the male characters.

Have a great week!

Driving at 14 With No Brakes!

“Brake Cake” … Another short story in my new book,
Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers

There’s more to it than sounds. In this story, which is set in a California suburb, the realm of the new housing tract is fraught with pioneer spirit and adventure. Sometimes necessity takes the front seat in order to get from one cul-de-sac to the next terrace, regardless of potential consequences. The errant trail blazer in this story is not whom you might think. Read my short story, “Brake Cake,” to find out who is behind the wheel. The answer is in my new book, Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers.

Travelers’ Shorts 2: Fascinating Short Stories

“Cy and Mindy Meechum”

This dramatic short story, based on true events, explores the vulnerabilities of naivete when mixed with jealousy and greed. What sets this story apart is its real life back story. The villains are real living people who don’t even know their murder plot was long ago uncovered. Although the names have been changed to protect the innocent, the schemers in the story will surely recognize themselves when they receive a copy of this book from some friend or acquaintance who will have recognized them in the story.

Revenge is best served cold.

Adding another sinister twist to this story is an astonishing tie-in to another story found within the same book. The reader will be astonished.

Find this story, “Cy and Mindy Meechum,” in the pages of my just released Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers.

More about Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers

One of the stories: Pine Tree Privy

This short story is about a chatty pine tree. You heard it right–a talking pine tree. The question is, what would a pine tree have to say? This one resides in front of a tract house on a busy corner. It, too, has a few secrets to share. Can a tree break your heart? Read “Pine Tree Privy” and find out. It’s just one of several original stories in Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers.

About the book, “Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers”

“Decision Thinking” from Travelers Shorts 2

People rely heavily on their portable personal electronic devices. What if a device was invented that made all of our daily decisions for us? In the short story, “Decision Thinking,” that is the concept.

“Decision Thinking” examines a day in the life of an average young man whose well-being may have become too closely tied to his personal electronic device–with consequences. Read and find out if he survives. The full story, “Decision Thinking,” is in my new book, Travelers’ Shorts 2, along with several other intriguing stories.

The first book is non-stop reading.) There are a couple of ingenious tie-ins to the new book (but they aren’t critical, just very, very clever).

To get started reading the great short stories in my first book, go here for more information and ordering options with no obligation: Travelers Shorts .

“Travelers Shorts 2” Update May 30, 2010

My second book of short stories, “Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers” is now back with the publisher after I recently submitted my final changes. I will have one more review of the cover and the interior and then it is off to production and distribution! Finally! It is a lengthy process. Some day in the near future I will share the dirt on what it is like to deal with this particular publishing company. In the meantime, I need to hold my tongue and avoid distracting them (any more than they already seem to be).
Travelers Shorts 2 is a departure from my first book in that many of the stories are more current and topical. Of all the stories I have written over the last couple years, several are worthy of a screen play. I won’t hold my breath, but…

The subtitle of the book, “Tethers,” has multiple meanings. Mainly, it represents the bonds between us (people), whether imagined or physical, or even imperceptible.  Our lives interconnect in many ways as revealed through the stories. The word, “tethers,” suggests the ties that bind us. Each story paints that picture in a different way. Be sure to read the other entries on my blog here, in the category “Travelers’ Short 2,” to find more about the individual stories contained in my book. The more you explore, the more you will want to experience “Travelers’ Shorts.”

That’s all for now. If you have not yet read my first book of short stories, “Travelers Shorts: Stories That Move…,” you need to get a copy now! Click on this Travelers Shorts  link to my web site for more on that. From there you can go to the popular and reputable booksellers Barnes & Noble and Amazon. They usually have my book at a discount and it is delivered quickly.  My books are also available in digital format for any computer, including wireless, which you can order very cheaply and download to your device. I recommend ordering my books in either hardbound or soft cover. The cover images are interesting and they relate directly to specific stories. Also, I designed the covers myself. (Those shorts on the cover of the first book are an actual old pair of walk shorts I own.) Oy!

Enjoy the Memorial Day Weekend!

“Travelers’ Shorts” the Title Story in “Travelers’ Shorts”

“Travelers’ Shorts” is the title story in my short stories book, Travelers’ Shorts. The obvious operating words are “travel” and “shorts.”

This story surrounds a road trip to Palm Springs, California taken during spring break. The main character and his friend are fashion victims in more ways than one when it comes to their spring break shorts attire.

Another featured character in the story is a brand new automobile (a blazing red 1984 Pontiac Fiero 2M4) which the main character drives on the car’s maiden road trip. The driver is obsessed with the sports car’s beauty and design, which also winds up testing a friendship during the course of the trip.

A cameo by Arnold Schwarzenegger (involving a pair of shorts) also punctuates this story ripe with humor, strong characters, and palpable imagery.

Find this story and other entertaining journeys in my book of short stories, Travelers Shorts. More information on the book is included in this blog site. Also, go to Travelers Shorts.com  for more information and ordering options.

Attacking Crows and Newspapers

“Attacking Crows and Newspapers”

This short story explores the fears and struggles of a newspaper delivery boy, but with several layers in its observation of the central character. In nods to both Hitchcock and Poe, there is the sinister side; the fear of the dark and the terror of an animal attack. There is also the psychological side; the boy with nightmares and imagined conflicts with everyday objects.   A slight tinge of the ribald, done with tongue and cheek humor, adds a further layer. There is conflict, resolution, and much more to take away from this story based in truths about the human condition from a child’s perspective. As with all of the stories in the first Travelers’ Shorts book, this one is based on personal experience. This story, in particular, begs to be read and re-read. Tim Burton might-could have a heyday with this one.

This short story is found in my book, Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move. Find out more about the book on this blog and go to my Travelers Shorts  web site for more information and ordering options.

More About My Writing

About my first book: Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move… All of the stories in that book have an underlying theme taken from the Robert Frost poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay. I first discovered that poem in S. E. Hinton’s book, “The Outsiders.” I took inspiration from the theme and applied it in various incarnations to the short stories in my book. Each one has a different bent. In one story, the twist is outrageous and funny–bordering on vulgar. In another story, the words of the poem are prophetic and poignant. In all of the stories, as with the whole of the book, the poem sums up the entire experience. As in good theater, all of my stories have conflict and resolution, as the poem exemplifies.

Another obvious theme I wanted to point out in the first “Travelers’ Shorts” book is the actual shorts. All of the stories (except one) have at least one pair of shorts that play a role in the story. Also, the shorts depicted on the cover of the book have a noticeable orange-yellow liquid around the crotch area. It is up to the reader to discover the significance of that image. The answer to that question is found within the last story in the book, titled Travelers’ Shorts.

I am Robert George Reoch, author of the “Travelers’ Shorts” books.

Google my name: Robert George Reoch.  I write books of short stories under the title: Travelers’ Shorts.  I once had over a dozen web sites. (There was a free promotion.)  Now, I maintain just a few. (Modest me.)  I am even in the Urban Dictionary under the word, “Reoch .”
This blog came with the website. Hence, I have launched another word galaxy here—another body of once freely spinning thoughts, now going in circles.

In October 2009, I published my first book, Travelers’ Shorts: Stories That Move…
(www.TravelersShorts.com) It is the first in a series of books of my original short stories.  My books aren’t collections of other writers’ stories. They are all born of my own imagination and experience.

In June 2010 I published my second book: Travelers’ Shorts 2: Tethers (www.TravelersShorts2.com.)

Important to note: These stories are not travelogues. My writings are not about travel. The book series title comes from the idea that while traveling (whether on business or for pleasure), one might enjoy reading short stories during the journey instead of a heavy novel or junk magazines off the newsstand rack. In fact, my unique short stories can be enjoyed by anyone, anytime, anywhere (and I do mean anywhere).

This is my introductory post. Look for me to ramble further about any topic that comes to mind. I also intend to provide revealing information about the process of self-publishing. Depending on how my second book goes with the publisher, I may end up spilling all the drama about the publishing experience, good or bad. So far, it has been a mixed bag of bad and good.

(Update on 9/22/2010: At this point, I am going to begin looking for another publisher. I will explain more later. I would not recommend iUniverse to anyone. They are evasive when asked to account for my book sales and royalties. They are already over 3 weeks late in reporting for the second quarter of this year. They never give a straight answer. Something is wrong with this picture.)

Visit my web sites to purchase my books. Enjoy them yourself or give as gifts. Your favorite travelers will certainly appreciate such a thoughtful present. My short stories will not disappoint.

Happy Travels,

Robert George Reoch

About This Blog

This is ALL about ME! … Ha! … No, not really, just kidding.

This blog provides items of interest for practically anyone. I started this blog mainly to draw attention to my published books of short stories, Travelers’ Shorts. You may notice I do not have any other advertising on this blog. There are plenty blogs created solely for the purpose of plastering their pages with ads in hopes of making money (which they don’t). This blog is not about ad space.

As you read my entries–there is so much good stuff–you will see that most of my posts are based on firsthand experience. I guarantee you’ll learn something, or at least be entertained (maybe even irked) by what you read here. We live in a busy world, so I may not update this blog on a daily basis, and I won’t post anything if I have nothing to say. I always keep my eyes open for interesting and stimulating anything to share on this blog, though, so check back often.

If you feel moved by what you discover, or grateful for something useful found here, please feel free to show your appreciation by purchasing my books. They make great gifts too. If not, still take a look around anyway and please come back often to see what’s new here. I enjoy expressing myself. I think I make sense. I try to be relevant. That’s what blogs were intended for, originally.

I welcome your opinion too. This site gives you the option of providing feedback. Just keep it clean, please. Be sure to add this site to your favorites (or see the email sign-up for update notifications) so you can easily come back again. Check out the Category Archives and see what’s new. Thanks for visiting.
